Marie Florio, Associate Director, Subsidiary Rights

Marie Florio has worked at Simon & Schuster for over 25 years and while she concentrates primarily on domestic rights, she has handled all types of rights as well as permissions and author contracts. She writes the selling pitches in our Rights Guides which are our most valuable early selling tool for both foreign and domestic rights.  We provide the information a potential buyer needs to license our books and help promote all the titles whether we control the rights or not.  She is primarily involved in serial (print and digital) excerpts, book club, electronic, large print, and audio rights.  While some of these markets are diminishing, they are all still very valuable sources of income and marketing for Simon & Schuster and we aggressively pursue them.  We know a great first serial can introduce a book to the marketplace and create the buzz in the media and among the public. In some cases, you are involved with the magazine's photo shoot for the excerpt. For a first-serial with People magazine, she once arranged a photo shoot of a coyote (the subject of one of our books) with the People photographer without getting him eaten by the coyote – which we managed to do!  She is very involved in electronic excerpts, an exciting and dynamic channel for books today. She is a bit of a tekkie, enjoying the "new" world of electronic publishing and keeps up with this fast-changing world through courses, conferences, and day-to-day experience.
