COME ON OUT TO THE BEACH!
Beach Lane Books, founded in 2008 and located on a flower-filled lane in San Diego, publishes books for all ages and across all genres, with a primary focus on lyrical, emotionally engaging, highly visual picture books for young children—and the adults who love them. Our list features established authors and illustrators in the field as well as brand-new talent, and our overarching goal is to publish books that are truly for children, books that connect with readers on a deep level and that become beloved childhood treasures people will return to throughout their lives.
Allyn Johnston, Vice President and Publisher
Allyn has been working in children’s publishing in her native California for twenty-four years.
Anne Zafian, Deputy Publisher
As Deputy Publisher, Anne works closely with the Publisher on key aspects of our business. She oversees our marketing team and marketing plans; and works closely with both the sales team and supply chain organization to maximize sales and manage inventory. Anne has been with S&S for more than 5 years, previously as a VP in our sales department responsible for both adult and children’s book sales. Prior to that, she worked at what is now known as Hachette Book Group USA, including Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, where her love of children’s books was first fostered.
Andrea Welch, Senior Editor
Andrea has the pleasure of working with a long list of wonderful authors and illustrators. Recent books she has edited include Sophie Peterman Tells the Truth by Sarah Weeks, illustrated by Robert Neubecker; Hello Baby! by Mem Fox, illustrated by Steve Jenkins; and the Brownie & Pearl series by Cynthia Rylant, illustrated by Brian Biggs. Andrea acquires projects ranging from very young picture books to middle-grade and teen novels—especially those that are filled with heart, humor, and irresistible characters.
A note from Marla Frazee about the Beach Lane Books logo:
Allyn grew up on the beach in Malibu, and she lives at the beach in San Diego today. The beautiful and various moods of the ocean are as much a part of Allyn's life as books are, and it is no wonder that her imprint will reflect this influence.
Throughout my life in Southern California, I have spent many hours at the beach, too. When the afternoon sun is low on the horizon, everyone and everything—adult, child, Frisbee, dog—is cast into glorious silhouette. When Allyn asked me to design the logo for her new imprint, I hoped to capture that sense of shimmering light, as well as the tangible feeling of walking barefoot on wet sand, bucket in hand, looking for treasure.
To me, Beach Lane Books embodies exactly that spirit of what a day at the beach offers—the wide scope combined with the intimate experience of personal discovery.
Sarah Jane Abbott, Editorial Assistant
Sarah Jane Abbott joined Beach Lane Books as editorial assistant in July 2014. She graduated from Bucknell University with a B.A. in English and Creative Writing and interned at the Stadler Center for Poetry before starting at S&S as a publicity assistant in 2013. She also serves as editorial assistant for the Paula Wiseman Books imprint and as a book reviewer for Simon & Schuster’s OfftheShelf.com. She loves quirky, imaginative picture books with a lot of heart and unique, literary middle grade novels.
