ESSENTIAL STAFF
BETHANY BUCK, VP, Publisher
KAREN NAGEL, Senior Editor
Karen joined the Aladdin team in April 2011. She has been fortunate to work on children's books of every sort and genre, but has a preference for picture and early and middle-grade chapter books (fiction and non-fiction)-the stories that are the first to capture the youngest imaginations. Whether a picture book or novel-- humorous, coming-of-age, mystery, or fantasy-she is interested in well-crafted stories, with an original perspective and genuine voice, featuring colorful (and sometimes offbeat) characters and situations. Her list runs the gamut from Helen Perelman’s popular paperback series Candy Fairies to the upcoming Mermaid Tales by Debbie Dadey to Heather and Ethan Long’s new picture book about two zany brothers.
LIESA ABRAMS, Executive Editor
Liesa has been with Aladdin since 2006, focusing on middle grade and tween novels and series. She especially enjoys fantasy and action-adventure series, and her list at Aladdin includes the #1 New York Times bestseller Beyonders: A World Without Heroes by Brandon Mull, the #1 New York Times bestselling Pendragon series by D.J. Machale, and the “ambitious, no-holds-barred adventure” The Accidental Hero: A Jack Blank Adventure from debut author Matt Myklusch. She enjoys working with first-time authors and has published many first novels at Aladdin, including author-illustrator Rachel Renee Russell’s overnight bestseller Dork Diaries and its sequels. The combination of comics-style art with engaging text in Dork Diaries struck a chord with Liesa right away, and her passion for comics also drew her--along with the book’s perfect balance of heart and humor—to Alan Silberberg’s illustrated novel Milo: Sticky Notes & Brain Freeze.
ALYSON HELLER, Assistant Editor
Alyson joined S&S in 2006 in the Associate’s Program and landed her job with Aladdin in 2008. At Aladdin, she works on everything from picture books through middle-grade novelsand assists Liesa Abrams. Alyson has edited or co-edited many of the books in the Aladdin M!X line, including the upcoming Seeing Cinderella by debut author Jenny Lundquist and Stealing Popular by Trudi Trueit. Her list also includes Lisa Schroeder, Jo Whittemore Cindy Callaghan and Julia Platt Leonard. She also co-edited the upcoming picture books The Monstore by Tara Lazar and I Loathe You by David Slonim. In addition, Alyson also edits the Goddess Girls series, along with the Hardy Boys Secret Files. She is particularly interested in middle-grade fiction with a strong girl protagonist, distinctive and true voice, and fun/unique commercial hook. She’s also on the lookout for another mystery-thriller for the middle-grade market. When her nose is not stuck in a manuscript or book, you can probably find her traveling, enjoying a Starbucks iced caramel macchiato or indulging in bad reality television.
ANNIE BERGER, Editorial Assistant
Annie joined the Aladdin Team as Editorial Assistant in March 2011 and assists both Fiona Simpson and Karen Nagel. While Annie is not currently acquiring, she enjoys books that have strong, funny voices and particularly likes fantasy, paranormal and dystopian novels...a little romance never hurts either.
FIONA SIMPSON, Editorial Director
Fiona joined Aladdin in 2009. She has worked on almost every aspect of trade and licensed publishing for children: picture books, middle grade, young adult, and most genres from general fiction to nonfiction, including contemporary fiction, fantasy, and religious titles. Her current list focuses on middle-grade and tween novels, particularly those with strong girl characters, and, original paperback series. However, her interests are wide-ranging and she requires the same things from any book she edits or reads: a well-thought out plot, believable setting, and characters that come alive.
